Surf spots in Peniche: the best waves depending on your level

Peniche is one of the most consistent surf destinations in Europe, but what really makes it special is how many different waves you can surf within just a few minutes from each other. From soft beginner waves to powerful world-class breaks, everything is close.

At Ferrel Surf House, we are just a few minutes walking from Baleal beach in Peniche, which allows us to choose the right surf spot every day depending on your level, the tide and the conditions. This is the key for real progression in surfing.

Beginner surf spots in Peniche

For beginners, the focus is simple: soft waves, safe conditions and enough space to build confidence.

Cantinho da Baia is the closest spot to the surf house, only around 100 meters or 3 minutes walking. It is our main beginner spot, especially on small to medium days. Waves are soft, predictable and ideal for first take-offs or early progression.

Prainha is also used for beginner lessons. It offers easy, mellow waves and is perfect to learn the basics in a controlled environment.

Praia do Gigi works both for beginners and intermediate surfers. On small days, it is very accessible for beginners. When conditions are a bit more solid, it becomes a great spot for intermediates to improve timing, positioning and consistency on the wave.

Intermediate surf spots in Peniche

Once you start catching waves consistently and standing up with control, Peniche offers a lot of room to progress.

Lagide is one of the most well-known reef breaks in the area. It is a proper intermediate left-hander wave with longer rides and more structure. We do not run lessons at Lagide, as it is a reef break that requires experience, good positioning and independence in the water.

On different conditions, Gigi and Cantinho da Baia can also work for intermediates, especially when you want to focus on technique, turns and wave reading in more manageable waves.

Surf spots we reach by car

One of the big advantages of surfing in Peniche is the flexibility. Conditions change every day, and we adapt by choosing the best spot for your level. Transportation is always included in our surf sessions.

Almagreira is a powerful beach break that works well for intermediates and stronger surfers. It offers more space and energy to work on maneuvers.

Pico da Mota is another consistent option that works well depending on swell direction and tide. It is often used when other spots are too small or not working properly.

Molhe Leste is more exposed and can offer longer rides when conditions align. It is better suited to confident surfers who are comfortable in moving water.

Supertubos, is one of the most powerful beach breaks in Europe. Known for its fast, hollow barrels, it is a world-class wave that hosts international surf competitions. This is an advanced surf spot and not part of beginner coaching.

Why Peniche is perfect for progression

What makes surfing in Peniche so effective for learning is not just the quality of the waves, but the variety available within a very small radius. You can surf soft, forgiving waves in the morning and move to more challenging conditions as your level improves. This ability to adapt every session is what creates real progression over a surf trip. At Ferrel Surf House, this is exactly how we structure every surf day: the right wave, for the right level, at the right time.
